Why does couples therapy cost so much?

The price of couples therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all—there are a few key factors that can influence what a therapist charges. Here’s an overview of (some of) what influences the cost.

Therapist’s credentials and training

Therapists with advanced degrees (like licensed psychologists) and additional certifications, like Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), or sex therapy training, often charge more because of their specialized skill set. You’re not just paying for their time; you’re also paying for the depth of their knowledge. At Wandering Pine Wellness, we also have couples therapists highly specialized in working with ADHD couples.

Years of experience

Newer therapists or pre-licensed clinicians under supervision may offer lower rates while gaining experience. More seasoned therapists, especially those who’ve been in practice for 10+ years or who work with complex relationship dynamics, typically charge more for their expertise and confidence in handling a wide range of issues.

In-person vs. online therapy

Many therapists charge the same for both in-person and virtual sessions, but others may offer slightly lower rates for online therapy due to lower overhead. If convenience or flexibility is important to you, virtual sessions might be a good way to save a bit while still getting high-quality support.

Session length and frequency

Couples counseling sessions usually last about 45-90 minutes. Depending on our clients’ financial situation, we sometimes offer quicker check-ins. How often you see your therapist (think: weekly vs. bi-weekly) will also influence your total cost.

Location and variable market rates

Therapy rates aren’t the same everywhere. What’s typical in one city might be far above or below average in another. Since we have practice locations in multiple states, we have an ethical obligation to charge all of our clients the same rate, no matter which office they get care from. We take this into account when setting our prices.

Does insurance cover couples therapy?

Unfortunately, no, couples therapy isn’t typically covered by insurance.

Insurance companies typically require a mental health diagnosis (like anxiety or depression) to approve coverage. Since couples therapy focuses on the relationship (not just one person’s mental health) it often doesn’t meet that requirement. That means you’ll need to pay out of pocket for couples therapy or marriage counseling.

Affordable options for couples counseling in Las Vegas

Cost shouldn’t keep you from getting the relationship support you’re looking for. If you can’t afford the full cost, here are some budget-friendly options to consider.

  • University counseling clinics. Local colleges and universities often hold clinics where therapists-in-training offer sessions at a significantly reduced rate. They’re supervised by licensed professionals, and this can be a great way to get support in an affordable way.

  • Nonprofit and community health centers. Some local mental health organizations may offer couples counseling on a reduced-fee or donation basis. While waitlists can be longer and you may have less flexibility, this can be a solid option if you’re looking for support without stretching your budget.

  • Therapy scholarship funds. Initiatives like the Loveland Foundation (which has a primary focus on Black women and girls) and the National Queer & Trans Therapists of Color Network (supporting queer and trans BIPOC) offer funds to help community members cover the cost of therapy.

Whatever your budget looks like, there are paths to getting support.

Is it worth going to couples therapy?

It’s totally normal to wonder whether couples counseling is worth the money. And the honest answer is: it depends on what you want to get out of it—and how ready you both are to show up.

Couples therapy isn’t just about “fixing” problems. It’s about learning how to communicate better, navigate conflict in a more intentional way, rebuild trust, and reconnect emotionally (and sometimes physically).

For many couples, it’s not just helpful—it’s transformational. And when you think about the cost compared to ongoing stress, constant miscommunication, or even the financial and emotional toll of a breakup or divorce, therapy can actually be a pretty wise investment in your relationship.

Here are some things couples often gain from therapy:

  • Tools for more honest, respectful communication

  • Skills to handle conflict without shutting down or blowing up

  • A deeper connection, whether that’s emotionally, physically, or both

  • Clarity around shared values, goals, or decisions

  • Support navigating big transitions like parenting, moving, or loss (or even intentional separation)

  • A safe space to repair after betrayal or long-standing resentment

  • A better understanding of their partner’s mental health diagnoses, and how that shows up in the relationship

That said, no therapist can guarantee results, and that’s why it’s so important to find someone who’s a good fit for your relationship. A strong therapeutic match, a willingness to do the work, and consistent effort between sessions all make a huge difference in how much value you get from the experience.

If you’re both open to exploring new ways of relating and you’re ready to invest time and energy into your partnership, couples therapy can absolutely be worth every penny.

How do I find a good couples therapist?

Once you’ve decided to invest in couples therapy, the next step is finding someone who feels like the right fit for your relationship. The connection you have with your therapist—how safe, seen, and supported you feel—can make a huge difference in how effective the process is.

Here are a few things to look for as you begin your search.

  • Relevant experience. Not all therapists are trained to work with couples. Look for someone who specializes in relationship counseling or has training in approaches like Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, or other couples-specific modalities.

  • Specialties in your struggles. Make sure a potential therapist has experience working with couples who are experiencing similar issues to you and your partner, whether that’s infidelity, navigating new parenthood, or sex.

  • Clear communication around fees and logistics. Ask about their rates, cancellation policy, and scheduling availability.  You deserve to feel informed from the very beginning.

  • Comfort and chemistry. You don’t have to click instantly, but you should feel like this is someone you can open up to. If something feels off after a few sessions, it’s okay to keep looking.

The right therapist will support your relationship without judgment and help you grow both individually and as a couple. It’s worth taking the time to find someone who truly fits.
